Summer Has Arrived

Well it's here. The kids are out of school and the thermometer climbs higher each day. We took the kids to the lake last weekend along with several balls, a bat (plastic), a few baseball gloves, and a dozen kites.

We put most of those items to good use but the kites were the big hit. The kids only had enough attention span to fly them for 10 or 20 minutes so they would hand them off and go do something else. Even the little one got to fly a while. She held on to that kite as instructed and she never once let it go. I was impressed.

The area was full of families and various parties. By the end of the day I had lent or given every kire we took with us to someone.

There was a while there where you could look up and see half a dozen kites in the air.

We took a blanket but the kids weren't idle long enough to use it.

I think we'll go again this weekend. The kids want to fish. We have all of the equipment but I dread sitting in the sun and the edge of the lake all day. I promised them we'd go. I better take a hat.

Polly auditioned for a couple plays recently. 2 just this week. She obviously impressed someone. They didn't even wait until the next day to notify her she had earned a role. I know she's excited and we all look forward to seeing another performance.

This one is closer to home and she wont have as much school work so she should enjoy this a little more I think.

Well I hope everyone is having a good summer.

Let's chat sometime.

I can't believe it's already May 8th. The kids are going to be out of school soon.

The year is going by so fast. Theres plenty of turmoil in the world. The economy has everyone excited but I'm so tired of hearing about it in the news.

I wish news outlets would do more inspiring stories. Theres too much sorrow and angst already. Let's have some joy and happiness.

Oh well ...

Hope all is well with you.

Well the new Quarter started Thursday. I'm taking Databases (Design, Implementation, and Maintenance) and Operating Systems. The OS class looks like it will be relatively easy. The DB class looks to be dry and heavy on the assignments.

I think I can mange although I don't look forward to the work this quarter.

I have been trying to teach myself to play a guitar and the more homework I have the less time I have to practice the guitar. I'm going to take lessons in the future but I figure I get start working on fingerings and scales and such now. So far its going well. I don't know how other people have such dexterous hands. Fretting is quite difficult for me. I'm getting better about it and I hope that people are right when they say I will get to the point that it's not a problem eventually.

Here is one of the guitars I own. This is the one I use and the kids aren't allowed to touch.

Stimulus Plan

Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the White House. One is from Chicago, another is from Tennessee, and the third is from Minnesota.

All three go with a White House official to examine the fence. The Minnesota contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil. "Well," he says, "I figure the job will run about $900: $400 for materials, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me."

The Tennessee contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, "I can do this job for $700: $300 for materials, $300 for my crew and $100 profit for me."

The Chicago contractor doesn't measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers, "$2,700."
The official, incredulous, says, "You didn't even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?"
The Chicago contractor whispers back, "$1000 for me, $1000 for you, and we hire the guy from Tennessee to fix the fence."

"Done!" replies the government official.

And that, my friends, is how the new stimulus plan will work.
